Are you at Risk for Celiac Disease?

There are stories about the gluten-free lifestyle in the media a lot lately. We read them all.  Living gluten-free is a prescription for more than 2 million people in the United States who have Celiac disease.  For them, it is not about weight loss and it's not a fad diet.  


There are three tests for Celiac.  A blood test (you must currently be eating gluten to get a proper evaluation), a biopsy of your villi (on the surface lining of your intestines) and a genetic blood test that reveals if you carry the gene for Celiac (and you might have the disease today or later in life or never.)  


If you think that you could be affected by Celiac, get the test.  Your doctor may then suggest eliminating gluten from your diet as a protection against triggering the susceptibility molecule. The more gluten you have, the more likely you will be to set off this immune reaction that could lead to Celiac.
